Hey Dad. Glad you took Curtis with you over the holidays... now he's got something to do that keeps him out of my hair when I go to visit! See you Sunday :)

Ha! Glad you approve. He could be doing worse things!

great work enjoy your pictures and write up would love to see the layout in person guess ill have to get a couple of c 424s in script just the the one day visit lol

great to see some of you guys having fun

DON

<em>Hey Don! Good to hear from you!

Any time you want to make the trek, just let us know. We hosted Stuart Gibb for a short visit on Tuesday evening this week - long enough to visit the BS&T and Brian's NeverDone Railway. It was nice to see him again. The 424's might just a little too new for the BS&T since the layout is loosely set in the mid to late 1950's. However, I have been know to stretch things a bit in my reality (GP-35's 'n such), so sure, bring 'em on! Ha!

Later!

Lovely, and timely too. It's great to see a layout come to life with an operating session - even more props that you've got it operational before the scenics are completed, which is practically unknown this side of the pond!

Do I see the Wholinthall turn powered by a pair of geeps. I take it they're GP/SD 7/9's - are they unpainted or is there a bit of shortline power showing up on the BS&T ?

<em>What? You don't test the trackwork/trackplan before making things semi-permanent with scenery? If we waited until the scenery as complete we'd never operate a layout. Usually we're tired of the layout and ready to rebuild by the time the scenery is "done" - if there's such a thing as layout scenery ever being "done". We've been operating since the end of March 2006 (we started tearing out the old layout the first of February 2006).

Yup, they are both undecorated. I haven't had the urge to break out hte airbrush and my CP paints yet. I've had them for more than a year and finally got lights installed a couple weeks ago. I put LED's in one of them (the lead loco in that picture) but they are too blue, so I'll have to get new ones that are either white or golden (haven't decided which yet).

Geeps and RS18's are the biggest locos on the BS&T. Local and yard switching is performed by EMD (SW's) and Alco (S) units. I have one Trainmaster that's presently at the head end of a passenger train (that never moves), a little 0-8-0 at the head end of another, a Baldwin VO-1000 that is not such a great runner so it's parked, and an RDC that hardly moves (it's a fine runner, just never have the crew for passenger runs).

Later!

Scott: Many thanks for the extensive report! Believe this is the first time I've had the opportunity to see your layout, looks impressive and surely has taken a lot of work. Nice setting too. Looks like everyone had fun.

Best wishes!

Bob

<em>Thanks Bob, I appreciate your comment.

Yes, everyone had loads of fun, as usual.

Scott

thanks for the report. Looks like everyone had a great tme.

The Big Question is who is doing the Yard work now that Brian has found freedom?

later

Doug

<em>I'm still working out the best operating scenarios for the BS&T. We started out having a dedicated yard "crews", but over the summer when there was a crew shortage I decided to have the wayfreight crews build and put away their own trains in the yards. This resulted in the Local crews having a little more time to pull outbound cars before the 1st wayfreight arrived. There were even a few op sessions without local crews where the wayfreight crew did everything along the way.

In the fall, when the full crew returned, I just kept that going. The way things are working now I don't think I'll ever have a dedicated yard crew, unless we have a lot of operators one evening. This way the wayfreight guys get to do some switching as well as mainline work.

Railroad operations are a fluid thing - they're never exactly the same from one operating session to another.
