Finally, A Track Plan

Okay, okay, it’s taken a while but I finally have a decent track plan that I can post. When you describing operations it is nice to have a map in order to follow the information that being presented. So, here it is…

trackplan-1.jpg

Bayside & Tidewater Model Railway (roughly 12′ x 31′)

It is not 100% accurate, but it is close. At least all of the industries are pretty close to their actual positions, and the towns are located exactly on the plan. The yards are slightly inaccurate though. The tracks aren’t exactly as shown. The main reason for this is I wanted to show the tracks leading into Tidewater, but since they run under Bayside it was difficult to show them on the plan. So, Tidewater yard is actually closer to the center of the peninsula and both yards have slightly more space between tracks than shown on the the plan.

Hey, it’s better than no plan at all!

Thanks for the drawing. It does make understanding the layout easier.

  2. Looks great – where’s the 5% grade located, again?

Oops! I forgot that little detail, didn’t I?

The grade starts just after the turnout heading into Kenville and continues to just before the passing siding in Derwin’s Drop. There is an RS2 and water tank stationed in Kenville to be used as a uphill helper, usually on the rear, but if the train is too long it gets cut into the middle. The West Side Switcher (SW1200) is actually used most often since it’s usually working in the area when helpers are needed.

The East Side crew sometimes performs the downgrade duties if it is handy, otherwise someone (usually me since I’m usually just holding up the wall anyway – HA!) brings up the RS2 from Kenville. The downgrade helper is not really necessary unless the train is more than 15 cars long. But it helps ease some of the gear binding even on smaller trains. I need a water tank for Derwin’s Drop.

  3. I am so impressed to see the track plan. First of all, it looks great. Someday I hope to see (and operate) the layout in person. But secondly, getting a track plan online is one of the great mysteries of life to me–I don’t have a clue where to begin to get the Carleton Railway’s trackplan posted. Great job, Scott.

Thanks Steve! I’m sure it help with picturing where things are located at least. I wanted to get the next article on operating the BS&T posted yesterday, but that didn’t happen. Hopefully I’ll get some time to finish it over the weekend.

I look forward to hosting some of you guys from Saint John some day!
